MEJI is proud to serve as the home of the Michigan Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (MLTCOP). This program strives to improve the quality of care and quality of life experienced by residents who live in nursing homes, homes for the aged, and adult foster care homes. In 2023, MLTCOP investigated, verified, and resolved more than 3,000 complaints, provided information to more than 9,000 individuals; and made more than 2800 visits to long term care facilities.
MLTCOP includes both the State Ombudsman and staff and a network of local ombudsmen whom the State Ombudsman program trains, designates, and supervises. The State Ombudsman staff and two local ombudsmen are housed at MEJI. Other local ombudsmen are housed at Area Agencies on Aging around the state. To contact a local ombudsman in your area, call 866-485-9393 or send us an email
Ombudsmen advocate for residents in facilities and are guided by the wishes of the residents. All services are free and confidential. While the vast majority of state ombudsman programs are housed in state government, MLTCOP's placement at MEJI allows it greater independence and more legal support for residents and the program. In addition to advocating for individual residents across the state, MLTCOP engages in systemic advocacy about the long term care system. It calls for the passage of laws, regulations, and policies that benefit more than 100,000 Michigan long term care residents.
MLTCOP also works with the media; seeks to educate residents, long term care providers, other professionals, and the public about issues of primary concern to residents; and produces many fact sheets and materials. For more information about MLTCOP and to see its materials, visit the MLTCOP website or call MLTCOP at 517-827-8040.
