People aged 65 and above are the most common group who qualify for Medicare. You may be able to get Medicare earlier if you have a disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant), or ALS (also called Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Medicare has four different parts:

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance). This covers things like hospital visits, nursing facilities, home health care, and hospice care.
  • Part B (Medicare Insurance). Part B is optional and covers things like doctor visits, outpatient care, and other medical services that Part A doesn't cover.
  • Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans). If you choose a Medicare Advantage Plan, a private health insurance company will manage your Medicare benefits.
  • Part D (Drug Coverage)
