What MAGIC Does
The Michigan Advancing Guardianship Innovations Center (MAGIC) works to improve Michigan’s guardianship system by promoting alternatives and advancing reforms that protect individual rights. MAGIC brings together multidisciplinary partners and people with lived experience to test innovative approaches that prevent unnecessary guardianships, expand decision-making alternatives, and promote practices that maximize autonomy, independence, and dignity.
Our Mission and Vision
MAGIC is guided by a mission to elevate individual rights and a vision for a more just and person-centered guardianship system.
Mission
The Michigan Advancing Guardianship Innovations Center (MAGIC) champions individuals’ rights and voices in all decisions. We challenge the status quo of Michigan’s adult guardianship and conservatorship systems by preventing unnecessary guardianships, advancing alternatives, and promoting practices that maximize autonomy, independence, and dignity.
By convening multidisciplinary partners and people with lived experience around bold pilot initiatives, we seek to serve as a unifying force to reimagine entrenched systems, test and advance solutions, and catalyze lasting change across Michigan.
Vision
We envision a Michigan where every individual’s rights, voice, and inherent dignity guide all decision-making; where empowerment, not exclusion, is the starting point; and where guardianship is rare, narrowly tailored, and never static.
In this future, due process is meaningful, alternatives are the norm, pathways out of guardianship are clear and accessible, and systems across disciplines are unified by shared best practices that honor each person’s strengths, autonomy, and humanity.
How MAGIC Advances Its Mission
MAGIC advances its mission and vision through several key strategies:
- Developing pilot projects to reduce unnecessary guardianships
- Training courts and professionals
- Promoting alternatives to guardianship
- Supporting statewide reform efforts
With generous funding from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, MAGIC will fill a crucial gap in innovation and education. MAGIC will have both immediate and lasting impact on the autonomy and well-being of vulnerable adults and the judicial system and stakeholders who seek to meet their needs.
