Webinar: Capacity Assessments – A Medical Perspective

How do medical professionals evaluate decision-making capacity—and what does that mean for legal practice? Join Kahli Zietlow, MD, and Leslie Dubin, LMSW, ACSW, of the University of Michigan for an interdisciplinary discussion bridging medicine, social work, and law.

Drawing on their clinical experience, the presenters will explore how capacity is assessed. Through practical scenarios, the session will examine how clinicians approach capacity as a domain-specific concept, emphasizing that an individual may have capacity for some decisions but not others. Presenters will also highlight key limitations of medical assessments—namely that they are tied to a particular point in time, context, and often focused exclusively on medical decision-making.

Attorneys will gain valuable insight into how clinical opinions on capacity are formed, what they address (and what they do not), and how to more effectively interpret and apply these assessments in legal settings.
